A-Squared Theatre Workshop, a new Asian-American stage workshop, is producing Chicago’s premiere of Philip Kan Gotanda's "The Wind Cries Mary," running from August 1-24, 2008 at City Lit Theatre.

Loosely adapted from Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler,Gotanda's interpretation tackles Asian American political and civil rights themes of the late 1960s.

For the six people in the Guild Complex's Poetry Performance Incubator, they have taken on the jobs of poet, playwright, ensemble member, actor, contributing set designer and…tour guide.

Tour Guides asks the question, "What is Chicago?" The variety of answers includes landmark neighborhood locations like Harold's Chicken and Moo & Oink. (It's about so much more than the Sears Tower and the John Hancock for Chicago natives.) The poets will take you on the CTA, on tours of their neighborhoods, through the tastes and smells of Chicago food and into the heart of how those of us who live here nestle next to and grate against those around us.

The Poetry Performance Incubator is a pilot project of the Guild Complex that has been percolating for the last five years. Though Chicago has a strong tradition of performance poetry, few poets have the developed sense of stage craft that actors have. Even fewer have worked in an ensemble setting. The Incubator pushes at the intersection of poetry and theater with the aim of creating a truly hybrid form. Poets and actors auditioned for the Incubator with the criteria of learning the theater or developing their writing, whichever was the less familiar for them, which included writing work for others as well as themselves and staging the work through an ensemble process.

13th annual Asian American Showcase - April 11 through 24, 2008. This year's theme is "Lucky 13" as we
celebrate film and video production by Asian American directors through 13 Chicago-premiere programs and a "Lucky 13"-themed exhibition by Asian American artists in the gallery/café.

Feature Highlights:

BACKGROUND

In July, Prince William Co. Board of Supervisors unanimously passed
the harshest local legislation in the nation aiming to remove "illegal
immigrants" from their county. Supporters say that the Board is brave
and it is necessary in order to preserve the law and quality of life.
Critics say that it's racist and a cynical case of self-serving
political grandstanding.

On November 6th, all local and state-level seats are up for election
in Virginia including PW Co. Board Chairman Corey Stewart and
Supervisor John Stirrup who introduced the controversial resolution.

Because of the timeliness of the subject, we felt compelled to create
a real-time, interactive documentary Youtube channel -- breaking with
the usual documentary post-production method that delays public
feedback for months and months.

Each video is shot and edited quickly by a small team of independent
filmmakers including Jeff Man, Tomiko Anders, Tom Moore, and Zhibo Lai.

Haejae Lee is interested in exploring the conceptual meanings of perfect American home for immigrants in Jamaica, NY. Her intention is to ask three business owners with various cultural backgrounds to describe interiors of the houses that they believe to be the perfect American home. Once materials are collected, her intention was to make paintings with each shop owner inserted in corresponding pictures and place the final pieces in their shops. However, due to lack of public participation, she is now creating a painting in which she appears as imaginary Korean nail salon owner in her American dream home. She is the public and the artist. the painting will be setup on a table in an imaginary store by the entrance to JCAL.

Parag V. Mehta - Parag is the Director of Training for the Democratic National Committee in Washington, DC. Prior to joining the DNC, Parag served as Deputy Political Director for America Votes, a coalition of 32 of the largest progressive groups in the country who joined forces to register, educate, recruit, and mobilize voters for the 2004 elections. In 2003, Parag was a Deputy Political Director for Governor Howard Dean's presidential campaign, based in Burlington, Vermont. In 2002 he served as Deputy Field Director for former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk's U.S. Senate campaign in Texas. From 2000-2002, Parag worked as a speechwriter and policy analyst for the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Living Memory/Living Absence is an experimental movement theater piece conceived, written and performed by Anida Yoeu Ali.

Living Memory/Living Absence is an exploration of memory and exile, and the pain of these experiences within the bodies of genocide survivors. In this interdisciplinary piece Anida performs poetry with movement inspired by Butoh set against a video backdrop of the sites and sounds of her memories of Cambodia. Anida’s performance traces her poetic fears of returning to her birth country after 25 years of absence. The joy she feels immersed in ancient Khmer traditions clashes with the irreversible legacy of a genocide that lingers in the streets. Anida Yoeu Ali is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary artist who believes in pushing artistic and political boundaries. She creates art that mixes the visual, spoken and written into performed investigations of hybrid identities. Anida’s work is haunting, both in its beauty and its rawness – a sensitive exploration of both aesthetics and of the interface where these two extremes meet, the area of conflict where so many original and creative possibilities are hatched. After watching her work, audience members have declared, “you are left feeling like the parent who has conceived a child, held him or her for a few hours, only to have the child ripped away from you, to be left only holding memories of what was mixed with curiosity in what could have been.”

Guns and Tampons: A History of Violence Against Women I Know is the new work written and performed by Hanalei Ramos.

In her first multi-media solo show, Hanalei has staged a series of performance pieces based on the experiences of several women who consider themselves victims and survivors of abusive relationships with family, lovers, and friends. By staging portraits of some of the most intimate moments of any woman's life, Guns and Tampons challenges our assigned definitions of womanhood and violence and how it is warped by cultural expectations, societal conditioning, and the more subtle forms of violation experienced by women. The work features a myriad of characters assembled across generations and circumstance. Guns and Tampons touches on the found stories of a high school senior's found diary entries, the lost interviews of an undocumented college student, a couple caught in the cyclical dance of violence, the language of assault, and the many people who are yearning to understand how they function while maneuvering through love. Guns and Tampons questions what it means to be a survivor and victim of violence, and exposes their muddled boundaries. However, the work serves as a hopeful narrative threaded by themes of shared isolation, patterns of love, and the chances we take toward the secret hope of self-understanding. Ultimately, the patchwork testimony of several individuals transforms itself as the story of all women, and becomes a compelling glimpse into a world of survival and strength.

A-Squared Theater Workshop, a collective of Chicago-based Asian
American theater artists, presents a staged reading of the play The
Wind Cries Mary by Phillip Kan Gotanda, a reworking of Henrik Ibsen's
Hedda Gabler.

The Wind Cries Mary explores Ibsen's timeless themes of power and
gender politics set against the backdrop of San Francisco's rock scene
and the Civil Rights Movement. Philip Kan Gotanda transforms Ibsen's
"Hedda" into "Eiko," a Japanese American woman of vast gifts and
intelligence burdened by the constraints of gender and tradition in
1968.

After the film, Bill Ayers, Professor of Education at UIC, will lead a discussion around issues of labor education, unionization, race, and immigration.

This film screening and discussion is part of NWA's on-going project "Learning Curves," which focuses on the theme of formal and informal education.

Matewan is about the well-intentioned labor leader Joe Kenehan (Chris Cooper) who arrives in Matewan, West Virginia, to unionize the coal mine workers. But his efforts to organize the coal company workers spark one of the most violent incidents in the history of the 1920-21 Coal Wars. Tensions grow between the miners and the company men, igniting a powder keg of racial hostility, corruption and betrayal. Matewan was nominated for an Academy Award and was the winner of the Independent Spirit Award, 1988.

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is part of the College of Architecture and the Arts at UIC and serves as a dynamic memorial to social reformer and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jane Addams (1860-1935) and other resident social reformers whose work influenced the lives of their immigrant neighbors as well as national and international public policy. The Museum and its programs make connections between the work of Hull-House residents and important contemporary social issues.

This series is curated by JAMES THINDWA, Executive Director of Chicago Jobs with Justice; labor historian and UIC Professor LEON FINK; and HELENA WORTHEN, Assistant Professor in the Chicago Labor Education Program at UIC.

Real Women Have Curves, Directed by Patricia Cardoso, with a discussion led by Deva Woodley of the Civic Knowledge Project. Set in East Los Angeles, this is the story of Ana, a Mexican-American teenager struggling to break free from the responsibilities and expectations of her mother, Carmen, and sister, Estela. Ana wants to attend college so she can better herself (she's received a scholarship to Columbia University), but she's needed in Estela's sewing sweatshop, where women labor to make dresses that are then sold for many times what the shop is paid to make them. Real Women Have Curves is the winner of the Dramatic Audience Award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

"MY LIFE DISORIENTED"

Ready for National Broadcast Asian/Pacific TV Pilot Premieres on PBS Dec. 26th

LOS ANGELES, CA - December 13, 2006 - A new Asian/Pacific American television show called "My Life Disoriented" will premiere on PBS with national broadcasts starting Dec. 26th. The future of the show could well depend on audience response to the original "pilot" episode airing as part of the acclaimed series, "Independent Lens."

The show's impressive cast includes Karin Anna Cheung (Better Luck Tomorrow), Tamlyn Tomita (The Joy Luck Club), Dennis Dun (Big Trouble In Little China), Autumn Reeser (The O.C.), and Di Quon (Maid In Manhattan).

Cheung, a familiar face from the 2003 film "Better Luck Tomorrow," recently remarked in a recent Asian Week article, "I remember being so excited when Margaret Cho's 'All American Girl' was going to be the first Asian American sit com -- actually, it didn't even occur to me until then that we didn't HAVE a show. It's cool to be able to possibly do the same thing for a new generation."

The show's producers, including Eric Byler (charlotte sometimes, AMERICANese), are asking people across the country to E-Mail PBS to request more air dates (with better air times -- some PBS affiliates are showing it at 3 AM) and to express interest in seeing the show become a series.

Please join us or an in depth exploration of the complex, personal and political topic of interracial dating. The event promises to be an engaging evening of intellectual and visual stimulation mixed with delectable food, drink, and empowerment. Guest Speakers will include, Rinku Sen and Mae Ngai. THere will also be a short performance by Rupal Soni and friends, and a short film by Kip Fulbeck.

Love may be blind, but can it be color-blind? The romantic vision of the Middle East and Asia held by the West has been defined by the activist & intellectual Edward Said as a mixture of racist assumptions, intertwined with and underpinned by colonialist desire to conquer the so-called "Other." The exotification of the mysterious Asia was a preface to conquering and dominating Eastern civilizations by the West.

Today in the U.S., statistics show that the largest group of interracial couples consists of white men and Asian women. How do representations of the East in popular culture and in the contemporary consciousness shape western male desire and inform our ideas of romance?

How are the historical and political reconciled within intimate relationships? How do we resist exotification, ensure equity and simultaneously demand legitimacy for interracial relationships?

This event is part of The Public Square at the IHC's series called Artists, Activists and Authors After Hours (AAAH). These events are intimate, informal discussions and meals that allow for meaningful exchanges among people who are engaged in similar projects and struggles. Since coalition building is one of the cornerstones of social change, AAAH programs are structured to give individuals a chance to meet one other and create intellectual community.
